Aics Mogadiscio – Somalia and Italy sign an agreement to boost domestic production

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation-Somalia Office and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization – UNIDO Somalia, have participated to the signature ceremony of the programme agreement to boost the manufacturing sector in Somalia, particularly in the fields of agriculture, livestock and fisheries.

The agreement was co-signed by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, H.E Abdullah Ali Hassan and the Head of the Somalia Office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Mr. Guglielmo Giordano, at the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Somalia, H.E Alberto Vecchi and other officials at the Italian embassy in Mogadishu today and UN Agencies.

This project will be implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Africa and the Middle East (UNIDO), as lead partner, together with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and it aims to boost domestic production.

The Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation stated that this is the continuation of a long series of other important interventions already funded by the Italian cooperation in the economic sectors in Somalia, aiming at job creation and stabilization of the country. He added that it is important to revitalize the domestic production in Somalia, also in the perspective of export, especially to neighbours’ countries like Ethiopia and Kenya.

The Italian Ambassador to Somalia indicated that Italy stands with Somalia to implement more projects on strategic value chains that will develop the country economy. He reminded the long-standing relations between the two countries, and the current excellent relations between the two governments.

On his part, H.E Abdullah Ali Hassan specified that the project is of great importance to boost the national economy and create jobs for unemployed youth as it attracts economic opportunities and motivates companies working in the field of production to work well and compete, stressing at the same time that his ministry will made unremitting efforts to implement this project in cooperation with the international organization that will finance it.
