Italy Supports the Coffee Value Chain in Ethiopia

On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) opened the doors of the construction site - nearing completion - of the Coffee Training Center (CTC), funded entirely by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) with the project "Improving the Sustainability and Inclusiveness of the Ethiopian Coffee Value Chain Through Public-Private Partnerships".

Thanks to the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the technical assistant of the initiative, the center of excellence of the ECTA will offer specialized courses for various professional activities (sensory analysis, roasting, coffee preparation) as well as short courses for enthusiasts, who wish explore the rich aromatic world of the Arabica variety, typical of Ethiopian Highlands.

The center will be equipped with the most modern technologies, bearing always in mind tradition. Machinery and courses’ contents have been chosen for CTC by Illycaffe and Ernesto Illy Foundation, which provided their expertise for the creation of the Center. The visit was also an opportunity to meet and exchange with the Director General of ECTA, Dr. Adugna Debele, on the future development prospects of the Ethiopian Coffee value.

The visit was attended by the Head of the AICS Addis Ababa Office, Isabella Lucaferri, the Director of UNIDO Ethiopia, Aurelia Calabrò, and several representatives of the European Union, German Cooperation - GIZ and the German bank KFW
