The "Bridging the Gap II" (BTG II) project supports the socio-economic inclusion, equality, and non-discrimination of people with disabilities through the development of the government competences and the empowerment of the Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in 5 countries (Sudan, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ecuador, and Paraguay). It also supports the mainstreaming of the disability for the development, the implementation and monitoring of inclusive policies and services, especially in relation to: inclusive education, universal access to healthcare and employment, social protection, and data collection.
The intervention strategy of the initiative follows an approach based on human rights, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities signed and ratified by Italy (UNCRPD) and the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The project started in 2018 and, for its execution, counts on a Consortium of agencies. It is funded by the European Union and co-funded by AICS, Austrian Development Agency (ADA), by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) and the European Disability Forum (EDF) .
The initiative is coordinated by the Spanish International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP)
The Countries of intervention of the project are those characterised by a low and medium income which have ratified the UNCRPD and/or requested support for the implementation of inclusive policies and actions in the disability sector.
The project has a Project Management Unit coordinated by the FIIAPP, and a Steering Committee, the decision-making body of the Consortium composed of the EC and the members of the partnership and of the Country Coordination Teams of each country involved.
The added value of the project is ensured by the European partnership which made available competences and know-how in the sector, as well as by the commitment of the authorities of the countries of intervention to work together with the civil society for the achievement of the goals envisioned, as stated in the publication "Stories of Bridging the Gap", which collects interviews to the members of the Consortium and the experiences of the project’s beneficiaries.
The BTG II project generated instruments and guidelines useful for inclusive development initiatives.
