Today, a humanitarian flight landed in Lebanon, operated from the UNHRD Emergency Response Base in Brindisi as part of the new airlift launched for Lebanon by the European Commission through the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). The flight carries supplies provided by the EU and Ireland, along with over 10 tons of aid contributed by Italy.

The materials address needs identified on the ground by UNHCR, which took charge of the supplies and will distribute them through shelters and response centers to families displaced by the conflict.

This operation highlights Italy’s collaboration with the European Commission in rapid emergency response, emphasizing the increasingly crucial role of the Brindisi UNHRD base as a humanitarian hub to mitigate international crises and emergencies. It is the second humanitarian flight to Beirut carrying Italian aid for Lebanon, following the first transport on March 19, which delivered approximately 30 tons of essential goods.

The operation is also part of Italy’s timely humanitarian response to the Lebanese population, totaling €10 million, of which €4 million is allocated to OCHA and FICROSS, and €6 million is designated for an urgent emergency call managed by the AICS Beirut Office and implemented through Italian civil society organizations active in the country. This initiative is expected to reach approximately 220,000 beneficiaries.
