The First Lady of the Republic of El Salvador, Gabriela de Bukele, and the Italian Ambassador to San Salvador, Paolo Emanuele Rozo Sordini, inaugurated the new cooperation initiative “Born with Care” (Nascere con Affetto).
The “Born with Care” project, funded with €3.5 million by the Italian Government through the Embassy in San Salvador and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), is being implemented by the University of Pavia in close collaboration with the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Health of El Salvador. The project aims to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality associated with premature births and congenital malformations, in the spirit of the right to health.
The initiative will support the training of Salvadoran healthcare professionals through short- and long-term internships in Italy. These training programs will cover key pediatric fields such as child neuropsychiatry, molecular biology, neonatology, obstetrics, genetics, ophthalmology, and gastroenterology, among others. In addition, highly specialized medical equipment worth around €1.5 million will be purchased to strengthen early diagnostic and treatment capabilities within El Salvador’s national maternal and child health system.
Over the three-year duration of the project, thirty technical missions will be carried out by high-level Italian specialists, who will work directly in El Salvador to support training activities, clinical evaluations, and knowledge exchange.
In his remarks, Ambassador Rozo Sordini highlighted that the project will benefit from the significant contributions of strategic partners such as the San Matteo Polyclinic Hospital in Pavia, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome—all renowned Italian centers of excellence in maternal and child healthcare and research.
