First 40 apartments of housing cooperatives in the center of San Salvador

On Friday 5 April, in San Salvador – El Salvador, a visit was held to the housing project for 40 families of the ACOV-UVD mutual aid housing cooperative, located in the San Esteban neighborhood. This is one of the housing complexes to be built as part of the project “Socioeconomic and cultural redevelopment of the Historic Center of San Salvador and its housing function through the cooperative movement”, financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and performed by the Ministerio de Vivienda of El Salvador. The project of the ACOV-UVD cooperative, which is 95% completed, includes 40 apartments distributed in three four-storey buildings, three commercial premises for business families, a multifunctional hall, a green area, a drinking water system and a cistern . The apartments have an estimated commercial value of $60,000, families will pay between 30% and 50% of the amount based on their income. Minister de Vivienda Michelle Sol highlighted that the cooperative model has several qualities, including collective ownership, self-management and mutual support. The families associated with the cooperative are involved in the various phases of the construction process, thus strengthening their management, administrative and manpower capabilities. “Italy, through its Cooperation, is once again the protagonist and promoter of an intervention in favor of Salvadoran men and women and their right to a dignified home” commented the Italian Ambassador to San Salvador, Edoardo Pucci . With this initiative, the intention is to rehabilitate the housing function of the historic center of San Salvador, a place “where any type of social, cultural and work activity can be developed in complete safety, thus guaranteeing the economic development of this country” added the ‘Ambassador Pucci. “Today, seeing the happiness of the families who worked to build their home makes us proud to have made a small contribution towards a great goal. This project continues, the objective is to build a total of 352 apartments” underlined Paolo Gallizioli, Director of the San Salvador branch of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
