The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Italian Embassy in Brasília, in collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), today organized the closing event of a humanitarian project aimed at protecting and fostering the socio-economic inclusion of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Brazil. Thanks to an investment of 500,000 euros, the initiative has benefited over 5,000 people in the state of Roraima, with a particular focus on indigenous communities, children, and adolescents.

The event, hosted by the Italian Embassy in Brasília, brought together representatives from the governments of Italy and Brazil, UNHCR, and partner organizations to highlight the importance of international cooperation in responding to the Venezuelan migration crisis. Over the 12 months of implementation, the project “Providing Protection and Humanitarian Assistance to Indigenous Communities and Venezuelan Refugee and Migrant Children and Adolescents” ensured access to documentation, education, healthcare, emergency housing, and financial support for vulnerable individuals in the cities of Pacaraima and Boa Vista.

Italian Cooperation funding contributed to Operação Acolhida (Operation Welcome)—the Brazilian federal government’s humanitarian response to the large influx of Venezuelans at the border between the two countries—by providing protection, legal guidance, and housing for around 4,000 refugees and migrants. Approximately 650 people in extreme vulnerability received financial assistance to help them achieve self-sufficiency.

“This project has been a beacon of hope for many. Over the past year, we have witnessed significant progress in providing essential protection and humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable populations crossing Brazil’s northern border. The impact of this initiative on the lives of Venezuelan refugee and migrant families is invaluable,” said Davide Torzilli, UNHCR Representative in Brazil.

Additionally, sports and cultural activities were promoted, directly involving 500 children, adolescents, and adults, contributing to peaceful coexistence and combating xenophobia.

The Italian Ambassador to Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, emphasized the importance of international cooperation: “Solidarity is a fundamental value for Italy, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that ensure dignity and opportunities for refugees and migrants in vulnerable conditions.”

Mario Beccia, Director of the AICS Regional Office in Bogotá, reaffirmed: “Italy’s commitment to humanitarian response remains steadfast, ensuring that those in greatest need receive the support necessary to rebuild their lives.”

Humanitarian assistance not only ensures the survival of refugee populations but also paves the way for their full socio-economic integration, allowing them to contribute actively to their self-sufficiency and the development of host communities. Initiatives like this demonstrate how international support can transform humanitarian challenges into opportunities for inclusion and growth for all, in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda, ensuring that no one is left behind.
